Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn take over the stage as the clock strikes 21:40 at their sold-out headline show in Heartbreakers, Southampton. With Frankie on vocals and Harvey on the decks, Frankie swaggers around stage in his vintage thick transparent rimmed glasses, a forest green coloured cap and matching jumper, whilst Harvey finds his place behind his set-up.
Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn are a vibrant upcoming hip hop two-piece, and the collaboration of Frankie’s melodic flow and singing voice alongside an impressive vocal range, plus Harvey’s ability to vibrate the whole venue with a deep bassline creates an interesting duo, and a performance bursting at the seams with energy.
FS&HG showcase their talents by playing a selection of tracks from a variety of different albums, including tracks from their 2014 album The Morning as well as new hits from their 2019 album The Lakes, which was recently released March 22nd. With the set list featuring tracks from their debut like ‘Put It On Me’ and ‘BJP’, as well as notorious ‘Small Hours’ from their 2017 album A Walk in Water, it is clear that the duo have established a firm loyal fan base - even in Southampton.
‘San Pellegrino’ and ‘Grateful’ from their second album The Flowers in Your Room (2016) are real standout performances, ‘San Pellegrino’s’ euphoric intro and Frankie’s in-sync smooth flow creates the perfect head bopping two-step tune, and the energy on stage radiates. Humble track ‘Grateful’ is rather heart-warming, the performance carries a level of grace and innocence as Stew pours his heart out, rapping about being able to repay those who have done him good, forgetting the past, and being grateful for what he has.
‘Small Hours’ from their 2017 album, A Walk in Water is a clear fan favourite, and its lyrical value justifies this. It is clear that the words this duo speak, and the feelings they communicate and reciprocate with their audience, is actually really raw and important. The songs are poured out from the heart and Frankie’s rapping just interlinks so perfectly with the instrumentals, listening and watching Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn is just like fitting the last piece in to its rightful place on a jigsaw puzzle.
